teamLab Borderless

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

The most excited toddler i've ever seen that couldn't get enough of this exhibition.

Please note: This exhibition is now closed. But you can check out teamLab Planets

Better late than never, we finally took our daughter to see TeamLab Borderless before it closes on the 31st August. I wasn’t sure if she’d be too young for it or if it would be too dark for her but when we got there she absolutely loved it. She could not believe it and was just so excited about everything she was seeing by dancing around, pointing at the walls and the moving objects (especially the butterflies - her latest obsession).

The Borderless exhibition is set up to have you wandering through various rooms with light and interactive art work displayed throughout, I won't go into much detail about this as you can read about it on their website but I will write more about how our daughter liked the exhibition.

As I mentioned earlier I wasn't sure if it would be overwhelming or scary for her but I thought lets give it a go and if she hates the place we can just leave. Well she absolutely loved every room besides the giant balloon room, I think the scale and size of them really scared her so once she indicated this room was not for her we moved onto the next one. Every room she loved, she wanted to touch the walls, run around and lead the way to a new area, I have not seen her this excited before. When she felt overwhelmed she always indicated that she wanted to be lifted up and wanted us to help her interact with the artwork. It's so amazing seeing her adjust to new things and take it all in. We spent about 1 to 1.5 hours in there with her and I think that was enough time for us and her (please note: no strollers are allowed inside the exhibition, but you can store them before you enter).

The Borderless exhibition will be closing down at the end of this month as they are redeveloping the whole site that it’s on and this is one of the last sections to close. I believe they will open up a new Borderless exhibition next year somewhere but I am not sure it will be the exact same.

If you are reading this post and you’re in Tokyo atm I would highly recommend trying to grab some last minute tickets before it closes next week on the 31st August. I found it a bit hard to get a time slot during the weekend but I kept looking every few hours and times randomly kept popping up. So if you’d like to go I would suggest keep looking because a time might come up.
